NEJ Stevenson Ltd is one of the UK’s most highly regarded bespoke furniture manufacturers. Neil Stevenson established the company in 1984 and has steadily developed the business over more than thirty years to become one of the most respected companies in its field, providing design solutions for fine quality, bespoke furniture and fitted interiors.
Neil developed a keen interest in wood working at a traditional Staffordshire chair makers whilst he was still at school. His passion for the art of furniture making continued and after completing his ‘A’ levels went on to study Fine Craftsmanship and Design at Rycotewood College. Once graduated, he moved to Wales to work for a traditional oak furniture company and then to Bedford to work on 18th century replicas of Chippendale and Sheraton designs. He was then asked to move to Jakarta to advise on design and construction of traditional European furniture.
Neil returned to the UK in 1983 and set about starting his own company and today NEJ Stevenson is a 30-strong company, with ambitious plans underway to build new workshops and double production. Neil and his team have developed an unparalleled reputation for crafting outstanding individual pieces of fine cabinetmaking and intricate fitted furniture for projects around the world. These have included opulent palaces, prestigious private residences, historic buildings, independent schools, universities and places of worship.
In 2003 Neil was granted a Royal Warrant as Cabinetmaker to Her Majesty The Queen, for delivering an outstanding service across all of the departments of the Royal Household and supplying projects to most of the Royal palaces and residences. As a consequence of this association the Company went on to work extensively with English Heritage and the National Trust and was also appointed as the specialist contractor to the Palace of Westminster.
In addition to being a Royal Warrant holder, Neil is Trustee of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and a Brother and Trustee of the Artworkers Guild. N.E.J. Stevenson is an Industry Partner of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) and Neil was formerly their Industry Director. He chaired the National Training Board for Furniture and sat on the Board of Proskills (the Sector Skills Council for Process and Manufacturing). Neil is passionate about increasing awareness of the bespoke furniture sector within government and encouraging young people to enter the skilled trades.
