Creative Director and Founder of Gunter & Co Interiors
Over the last decade Irene Gunter has become one of Britain’s leading Interior Designers. She grew up in Belgium surrounded by a family who loved architecture and interiors. Her early childhood involved visiting all the exhibitions in the area and holidays centred around visiting noteworthy architectural sights. As a result, Irene’s passion for design started early. Many houses were being built in Lego and she was forever re-arranging all the furniture in her room – much to her parents’ despair!
Irene studied art history and, with her meticulous eye for detail, Interior Design was a very natural career choice. She attended the prestigious Inchbald School of Design before honing her aesthetic working for some of London’s best-known design studios including luxury property design and development company Finchatton.
In 2014, Irene founded Gunter & Co Interiors to create beautiful but functional homes for her clients. She is drawn to natural materials and her love of travel has enabled her to experiment with different design traditions from around the world. She has worked on a wide range of projects - from Grade II listed country estates to modern penthouse apartments in One Hyde Park – that have the common thread of elegant simplicity and custom design details. Her style is luxurious but understated and an eclectic mix of layering brings the original architecture of each project to the forefront.
Working closely with her clients, Irene combines fabric, texture and colours to reflect the architecture of the property and the life and style of the owners. The partnerships forged with her clients are genuine and often turn into longstanding relationships.
“Clients are at the heart of the Interior Design process; the designs are only successful if clients recognize their vision in our work.” Says Irene. With that vision as the starting point, every project is approached with the belief that beautiful interiors are not bound by a single aesthetic.
The design team originates from across Europe, giving the company a wide creative reference pool and a fresh and unique point of view, all of which is channelled into the design process to create beautifully curated and tailored spaces. Unexpected elements, natural textiles and custom pieces are sourced or made by the most accomplished and experienced craftsmen in the design industry.
The company specialises in bespoke projects. Whether it be prime commercial projects or luxurious private residences in the UK or across the globe, Irene has brought together a leading team of interior designers, interior architects and project managers who work tirelessly to make sure each design fits seamlessly into her clients’ lives.
Past projects include this apartment in Marylebone. “This home was a joy to design thanks to the bold taste of our client. The brief allowed for an eclectic and fun design, which we achieved by using a combination of modern and vintage furnishings as well as layering patterns, textures and bright colours.” Says Irene.
Future projects include Grade II listed apartments in Queens Gate and Hyde Park Square, a number of flats in central London and townhouses in Little Venice and Kensington.
